This process occurs due to 1. Incorrect mixing of the mortar & or 2. A chemical reaction set off by salt crystals drying & dissolving in the hydrated lime mortar. With ongoing exposure to rain, salt and the drying process the salt crystals grow larger, continuing the deterioration of mortar & brick work.
